 Sleep Technology Job Descriptions

Together with the American Association of Sleep Technologists, the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists, and the American Society of Electroneurodiagnostic Technologists, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) developed a set of job descriptions for the sleep technology profession.

These job descriptions outline the recommended skills and competencies that should be required for advancement in the profession. The purpose of these standards is to provide consistent criteria that can be used to evaluate the development of professionals who practice sleep technology.

TRAINEE DESCRIPTIONTRAINEE DESCRIPTION
A trainee performs the basic skills of sleep technology under the supervision of a technician or technologist.
 
TECHNICIAN DESCRIPTIONTECHNICIAN DESCRIPTION
A technician has a comprehensive understanding of sleep technology skills and works under the supervision of a technologist or clinical director.
 
TECHNOLOGIST DESCRIPTIONTECHNOLOGIST DESCRIPTION
A technologist works under the supervision of a clinical director and has earned certification as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT).
