On August 3, 2012, New York established ‘authorization’ for sleep technologists. Individuals must now hold an authorization certificate from the State Education Department to provide sleep technology services or to use the title “Authorized Polysomnographic Technologist”. Licensed individuals who are already permitted to practice sleep technology services within their scope of practice, including respiratory therapists and respiratory therapy technicians, may continue to do so without obtaining the sleep technology authorization.
The Board of Regents adopted final regulations implementing the provisions of the law at their October 2012 meeting.
The regulations outline the coursework and clinical experience requirements an individual must fulfill when seeking authorization. The regulations also define the scope of practice and includes a grandfathering clause which enables individuals currently working in the field to receive authorization if they meet specific requirements. Individuals who wish to apply under through the grandfathering provision must submit their application by February 3, 2014.
Application forms, as well as additional information on the laws, regulations, and licensure requirements can be found at: http://www.op.nysed.gov/prof/polysom/. Questions can be addressed to the State Board for Respiratory Therapy office at RTBD@mail.nysed.gov or 518-474-3817, x.120.
